Fair Trade Percussion GuiroSave £2.15, normally £7.15
This Fair Trade Guiro is hand carved in Bali from bamboo. It has been polished, decorated with abstract detailing then vanished giving it a purely unique finish. Measuring 40cm long the guiro is an open-ended hollow gourd with a number of parallel notches carved on the top side. It comes with a bamboo stick (or a pua) which when rubbed along the top fluting produces a ratchet like rasping percussion sound.
This fair trade cylindrical instrument has two large holes in its back for you to place your thumb and finger in enabling you to be able to securely hold it whilst making music.
It is policy that the craftsmen making these instruments are given a fair wage for their workmanship.
The importer of this Guiro has a direct trading policy and they are a member of BAFTS. They visit the poorer regions of the world, such as; Indonesia, Nepal, Peru and the Amazon in search of quality crafts. Once found they pay a fair price, often making advanced payments to enable craftsman or artist to purchase raw materials. This direct trading policy currently provides well paid regular employment for about 200 families.
